Dave Verification Code: Signing In and Fixing Code Problems

A Dave verification code is a code Dave texts to the mobile number on your account to confirm it’s really you. You get one when you sign up, and when you log in with a texted code instead of your password.
Here’s when Dave sends it, what to do if it doesn’t arrive, and which phone number to use.
When Dave sends a verification code
- When you sign up. Dave asks for your mobile number during sign-up: “Your phone number is used to protect your account with two-factor authentication. We will send a verification code to this number.”
- When you log in with a code. On the login screen, tap Log in with password, enter your phone number, then tap Use another way to log in and Text me a code. Dave says to “Enter the 6-digit code we text you”, and adds: “Sometimes we’ll ask for extra verification to make sure you’re you.”
- When you change your number. Dave asks you to confirm you have access to the new number before it switches.
Dave’s terms list 24293 as the number its multi-factor authentication codes come from. And Dave “will never contact you and ask for your verification code or password,” so never give the code to anyone who asks for it.
Can you log in to Dave without the app?
No. Dave’s help center says: “All of Dave’s features are only available by using the Dave app.” So plan on signing in through the app on an iOS or Android phone.
For quicker sign-ins, turn on Face ID or fingerprint login under Settings > Security settings.
Which phone number should you use for Dave?
Dave verifies who you are: “Under federal law, we must make sure your identity is accurately identified before opening any financial account.” It also says “you can only have one Dave account in your name”, and its terms ask you to confirm that “the telephone number you have provided to us is your contact number and not someone else’s.”
So use a number that stays yours:
- Your own mobile number is the simplest choice.
- A dedicated long-term number is the alternative if you’d rather keep your personal number private: rent it for 3 to 30 days with auto-renew, or choose an All services plan, so the number stays yours.
- Not a 20-minute number. Once it expires, you can’t receive Dave’s next code.
A different number doesn’t change who you are to Dave. This isn’t a way around Dave’s identity checks or its one-account rule.
How to receive Dave codes on a PVADeals number
- Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
- Choose Dave from the list of websites for the United States. If it isn’t listed, rent an All services number instead, which works on any website.
- Pick a long-term rental (3, 7, 14 or 30 days) and turn on auto-renew.
- Enter the number in Dave, at sign-up or later: tap the Settings gear, then Edit Profile, then your phone number.
- Copy the code from your PVADeals dashboard, where it appears as soon as it arrives, and enter it in Dave. If you changed your number, Dave then emails you to say the change worked.
PVADeals numbers are real non-VoIP numbers from carriers, so Dave sees an ordinary mobile number. They receive SMS only, and no number is guaranteed to be accepted. See our US phone numbers.
If the Dave verification code doesn’t arrive
- Log in with your email instead. On the login screen, tap Log in with password and enter your email. Then tap Need help? to reset your password, or Use another way to log in to get a one-time link by email. Dave’s login help walks through both.
- Check your spam folder. Dave says to “Double-check your spam or junk folder for a message from no-reply@dave.com”, and if you asked more than once, to “make sure you’re using the most recent one we sent”.
- Update your number once you’re in. Dave says keeping it current “is important for logging in and getting security alerts.” See how to update your phone number.
- Still stuck? Contact Dave’s Member Success team: in the app, open Settings, scroll down and tap Chat with us.
- No SMS on a PVADeals number? If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost comes back to your balance automatically as store credit.
Keep your personal number private
A long-term number from PVADeals receives Dave’s codes without your personal mobile. See the prices below, or read our guides for other money apps: GO2bank, Stash and Kikoff.
