Random phone number generator
Generate random US and UK phone numbers that are safe to use in forms, tests, mock-ups and stories. Every number comes from a range set aside for fiction, so it never rings a real person, and it can’t receive texts.
Generate numbers
- (212) 555-0147
- (415) 555-0182
- (312) 555-0109
- (713) 555-0136
- (617) 555-0193
These numbers can’t receive calls or texts. Need a code? Use a free temp number or rent a private US or UK number from $0.09.
Are random phone numbers safe to use?
A truly random number might belong to someone, and they’d get the calls or texts meant for your test. That’s why this generator only uses numbers that telecom regulators set aside for fiction:
- US and Canada: 555-0100 to 555-0199. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator says: “The fictitious, non-working numbers, 555-0100 through 555-0199, will remain reserved for entertainment/advertising.”
- UK: mobile numbers from 07700 900000 to 07700 900999, and London numbers from 020 7946 0000 to 020 7946 0999, from the ranges Ofcom reserves for TV and radio drama.
Other 555 numbers aren’t safe: NANPA lists 555-1212 as directory assistance, and the rest have gone back into its inventory.
Can a fake phone number receive verification codes?
No. A website sends its code by text to the number you enter, and a fake number has no phone line behind it, so the code goes nowhere. Many websites also check a number’s line type first and refuse numbers that aren’t real mobile lines.
To receive a code without giving out your own number, use a real number instead:
- Free temp numbers: real US and UK numbers that anyone can read. Fine for a test, never for an account you want to keep.
- A private non-VoIP number: a real US or UK mobile number from $0.09 for 20 minutes, or 3 to 30 days you can renew. See our US and UK phone numbers.
