How to Verify Your Cash App Account: ID and Sign-In Codes

Cash App identity verification and sign-in code

To verify Cash App, you confirm your identity in the app with your legal name, date of birth and the last 4 digits of your SSN or ITIN. That’s separate from the Cash App verification code, the one-time code Cash App sends each time you sign in. A phone number never stands in for identity verification.

This guide covers both: what verification asks for and unlocks, how to check whether you’re verified, and what to do when the sign-in code doesn’t arrive.

What Cash App verification asks for

Cash App’s help center lists three things: your legal name, your date of birth and the last 4 digits of your SSN or ITIN. It can ask for more: “In some cases, Cash App may also request your full SSN/ITIN, residential address, unexpired government-issued photo ID, and/or income verification or source of funds.”

There’s an age rule too: “We’re unable to verify anybody under the age of 18.”

What verifying your Cash App account unlocks

Cash App requires verification “to access certain products and features”, and unverified accounts have low limits:

Unverified account Verified account
Sending and receiving Up to $1,000 per rolling 30 days, $1,500 in total Send up to $40,000 per rolling 30 days; receive limits shown in the app
Cash App balance Up to $1,000 Unlimited
Cash App Card, bitcoin, stocks Needs verification Yes

Verification is also needed to sponsor someone aged 13 to 17 and to connect your accounts.

How do I verify my account on Cash App?

Cash App prompts you when you reach the unverified limits: “Once you reach these limits, we’ll prompt you to verify your identity in-app.” To start it yourself:

  1. Tap your profile icon at the top right of the Cash App home screen.
  2. Choose Personal Information.
  3. Go to the Identity verification section and select Verify. Cash App notes: “This option may not always be available.”
  4. Enter your legal name, date of birth and SSN or ITIN digits, and follow any request for more information.

If Cash App asks you to scan a driver’s license, it suggests taking the photo “in a well-lit, glare-free area” against a dark background, and checking that the license is valid.

How do I know if my Cash App is verified?

Open the same screen: profile icon, Personal Information, then Identity verification. Cash App says: “If we’ve verified your identity, it will say Verified.” Your current limits are under Limits in Account & Settings.

A phone number doesn’t verify your identity

Your phone number is a contact and sign-in detail. Cash App’s terms list a “text-enabled mobile phone number” among the information it may require, and you agree that what you provide “is true and accurate” and to “keep all Account Information current”. Cash App may also ask you “to confirm ownership of your email address, mobile phone number or financial instruments”.

No number changes who the account belongs to. If Cash App “cannot verify your identity to our satisfaction”, the account stays restricted.

Cash App sign-in codes

“Every time you sign in to your Cash App account, you’re sent a one-time-use login code.” This is the code many people call the Cash App verification code or identification code, and it’s meant for you alone. Cash App says: “Cash Support will never ask you to provide your sign-in code, PIN, or other sensitive information like your full bank account information.”

Got a code you didn’t ask for? Cash App says that if a sign-in code arrives unrequested by email, “someone may be trying to access your account”, and recommends securing that email account “by updating your password and enabling two-factor authentication.” To reach Cash App yourself, use the app or (800) 969-1940, which Cash App calls “the only phone number customers can call for Cash App Support.”

Not receiving the Cash App verification code?

  • Check the phone number or email. An account you can’t get into “might have been created using a different phone number or email address.”
  • Lost the number or email? On the sign-in screen, tap the “…” icon at the top right, select “I need help logging in” and follow the prompts.
  • Replied STOP to Cash App before? Its terms say that after a STOP, “you will no longer receive SMS messages from us.” Contact Cash App Support to sort it out.
  • On a PVADeals number: the code appears on your dashboard as soon as it arrives. If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost comes back to your balance automatically as store credit.

How to change the phone number on Cash App

In the app, go to Your account tab in the top right of the home screen, open Personal Info, then choose Add for a new number or tap the existing one to update it. Online, sign in at cash.app/account and go to Account, then Basic Info.

Change it before you lose the old number. Cash App’s terms ask you to keep it current, and you sign in with the phone number or email connected to the account.

Using a second number with Cash App

If you’d rather not give Cash App your personal number, use a second number you’ll keep. Cash App sends a code every time you sign in, so a 20-minute number would leave you unable to receive the next one. The number also doesn’t change whose account it is: verification still uses your own name, date of birth and SSN or ITIN.

  1. Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
  2. Choose Cash App from the list of websites, with a US number. If it isn’t listed, rent an All services number instead, which works on any website.
  3. Pick a long-term rental (3, 7, 14 or 30 days) and turn on auto-renew, so you keep the same number.
  4. Add the number under Personal Info in Cash App and request the code. PVADeals numbers receive SMS only.
  5. Copy the code from your PVADeals dashboard and enter it in Cash App.

Cash App decides which numbers it accepts. A PVADeals number is a real carrier mobile line, so Cash App sees an ordinary mobile number.

Verify with your own details, keep your number private

Identity verification needs your own details, and no phone number changes that. A long-term US number from PVADeals keeps your personal number away from your sign-in codes. See our US phone numbers and the prices below, or read our guides for Venmo and PayPal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify my account on Cash App?
Tap your profile icon, choose Personal Information and go to Identity verification. Cash App asks for your legal name, date of birth and the last 4 digits of your SSN or ITIN, and in some cases more, such as a government-issued photo ID.
How do I know if my Cash App is verified?
Open Personal Information from your profile icon and look at the Identity verification section. Cash App says: “If we’ve verified your identity, it will say Verified.”
What does Cash App verification unlock?
Higher limits and more features. Unverified accounts can send and receive up to $1,000 per rolling 30 days, while verified accounts can send up to $40,000 and have an unlimited balance. Ordering a Cash App Card and buying bitcoin or stocks also need verification.
Why am I not receiving my Cash App verification code?
Check that you’re signing in with the phone number or email on the account. If you no longer have it, use “I need help logging in” on the sign-in screen. If you once replied STOP to a Cash App text, Cash App’s terms say “you will no longer receive SMS messages from us.”
What is the Cash App identification code?
Most likely the one-time code Cash App sends each time you sign in. Keep it to yourself: Cash App says its support “will never ask you to provide your sign-in code”.
Can I verify Cash App with a temporary phone number?
No. A phone number never verifies your identity: Cash App checks your name, date of birth and SSN or ITIN. For the number on your account, use one you keep, because Cash App sends a code every time you sign in.
