Can You Use WhatsApp Without a Phone Number?

Using WhatsApp without your phone number

No. Every WhatsApp account belongs to a phone number: WhatsApp’s help center says “To activate your WhatsApp account, you must register an active phone number for verification.”

What you can avoid is exposing your personal number: a username hides it from people who haven’t saved it, and a second number keeps it off the account entirely. Linked devices only add screens: they still need a phone with the account on it. Here’s what WhatsApp’s help center says about each, as of November 2026.

Does WhatsApp need a phone number to register?

Yes. WhatsApp sends a 6-digit registration code to confirm that you own the number, and “You must be able to receive the registration code through SMS or phone call.” Signing up through your Meta Account (the one behind Facebook and Instagram, still called Accounts Center for some people) doesn’t skip it: you still “Choose a phone number to use and tap Done”, then get the code by SMS.

The number also has to be the right kind (WhatsApp’s registration guide):

  • A mobile number you own. VoIP, toll-free, premium, universal access (UAN) and landline numbers are out (landlines work only on WhatsApp Business), and the Terms of Service ask you to “provide your current mobile phone number”.
  • An active SIM that gets the code. WhatsApp’s troubleshooting page expects “an active SIM card in your phone for the phone number you want to register” that can receive SMS or calls. PVADeals numbers receive SMS only, with no SIM you hold, so they can receive the usual text-message code but aren’t the setup WhatsApp describes.

Email doesn’t replace the number either. WhatsApp can send a code by email only “If you’re logging in to your existing WhatsApp account using your phone number” and you added an email address earlier.

Can you use WhatsApp on a computer or tablet without a phone?

Only as an extra screen for an account on a phone, unless it’s an Android tablet. “To use WhatsApp Desktop and Web, you must install WhatsApp on a phone with an active phone number and then link your devices.” You link a computer, iPad or second phone by scanning a QR code with your primary phone, and “You can link up to four devices at a time to your primary phone.”

A linked device doesn’t need a number of its own, but it can’t stand alone:

  • It can’t become the main device. “Linked devices (Windows, Mac, Web, iPad, and wearables) can’t be used as the primary device on an account.”
  • It depends on the phone. “Linked devices work without your phone online, but will log out if your phone is unused for over 14 days.”
  • Android tablets are the exception. “To use an Android Tablet as a primary device, you must register your account from that device”, which means entering a phone number on the tablet, just as on a phone.

Do WhatsApp usernames replace your phone number?

No, and they’re not available everywhere yet. WhatsApp’s usernames guide says “Usernames on WhatsApp are rolling out gradually over the next few months and might not be available to you yet. In the meantime, you can reserve your username.”

What a username does:

  • “With a username, your phone number will not be visible when you message or call anyone who doesn’t already have it saved in their contacts.”
  • People reach you by typing your exact username: “There isn’t a searchable directory”.

What it doesn’t do:

  • “A phone number is still required for your WhatsApp account.”
  • “Even if you have a username set up, people can still contact you by your phone number if they have it.” Contacts who saved your number keep seeing it.
  • When you message someone new, WhatsApp says “we might share what country your phone number is registered in”.

Without a username, your number is on show: WhatsApp says “If you delete your username, people will be able to see your phone number again.” To set one up, go to Settings, tap your profile, then Create username, or Reserve username where usernames haven’t arrived yet.

WhatsApp without your phone number: the options compared

Option Still needs a phone number? Keeps your personal number private? The catch
WhatsApp Web, Desktop or iPad Yes, on your primary phone No Logs out if the phone goes unused for over 14 days
Username Yes From people who haven’t saved your number Rolling out gradually; you may only be able to reserve one
Email or passkey Yes No Helps you verify again, not sign up
A second number Yes, but not your personal one Yes You have to keep the number

How to use WhatsApp without giving out your number

To keep your personal number off the account, register a different one: a real mobile line you can keep, not just any virtual phone number. That rules out VoIP app numbers and public receive-SMS pages, where anyone can read your code. A throwaway burner number is risky too: once it’s gone, you may lose your way back in. Our guide to a virtual number for WhatsApp covers which numbers WhatsApp accepts and why free ones fail.

A PVADeals number is a real US or UK mobile line, a non-VoIP number, so WhatsApp usually treats it like an ordinary phone (see VoIP vs non-VoIP numbers). Every number is fresh and has never been sold before. The code appears on your dashboard, so you don’t need a SIM card to receive it, and it works from any country.

A second number also lets you run a second WhatsApp account on the phone you already use: “To register a second account on WhatsApp, you will need to have a separate phone number.” For other ways to get one, see how to get a second phone number.

How to register WhatsApp with a PVADeals number

  1. Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
  2. Choose WhatsApp and the country: the United States or the United Kingdom.
  3. Pick a rental you can keep: long-term (3, 7, 14 or 30 days) with Auto Renew, or an All services plan. A 20-minute number can also receive the code, but see the next section.
  4. Enter the number in WhatsApp with its country code (+1 or +44) and wait for the text message: a PVADeals number can’t take the voice or missed call.
  5. Type in the 6-digit code from your PVADeals dashboard.
  6. Secure the account: add an email address, turn on two-step verification and create a passkey.

Short-term or long-term: which keeps your account?

WhatsApp asks for a code again when you re-register, for example on a new phone: its registration screen appears “when you’re creating a new account or re-registering your existing account”. Unless you have the old phone or a fallback (below), that code goes to the number, so the account is only as safe as your hold on it. If the number passes to someone else and they register it, you’re logged out.

A 20-minute number can get the first code, but reuse later isn’t guaranteed. A long-term number (3, 7, 14 or 30 days, unlimited SMS while it’s live) stays yours while Auto Renew and your credits keep it going, and an All services plan covers other apps on the same number, by the month.

To stay in control:

  • Move before you stop renting. On your primary phone, use Settings > Account > Change number to move WhatsApp to a number you’ll keep. It takes your chats, settings and username with it, but “If you change your phone number by mistake, there’s no way to revert this change.”
  • Don’t keep switching. WhatsApp asks “Please don’t repeatedly switch between different devices and numbers”, or you may be blocked from re-verifying.
  • Add a fallback. An email address lets you “recover your account without needing a connection for SMS or a phone call”, and when you register again, “you can use your passkey instead of an SMS code”. Neither replaces the number.
  • Keep using it. “WhatsApp accounts are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity.”

If the WhatsApp code doesn’t arrive

Stay with the text message: WhatsApp’s voice and missed calls can’t reach a PVADeals number. Don’t guess the code, or you’ll be locked out for a while. And let the timer run out before you ask again: “Each time you request a new code, the wait before you can request another one gets longer.”

If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost goes back to your balance automatically as store credit, and you can flag a number as bad before any SMS arrives (within the 20 minutes for short-term, within 24 hours of purchase for long-term).

For codes that don’t arrive on any app, see not receiving verification codes.

Keep your personal number off WhatsApp

WhatsApp always needs a number, but it doesn’t have to be your personal one. Rent a real US or UK number that you keep: see the prices below, or our US and UK phone numbers. For other apps, see Telegram without a phone number and Signal without a phone number.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use WhatsApp without a phone number?
No. WhatsApp says “Verifying your phone number with a registration code is the only way you can activate your account.” Linked devices and usernames don’t change that. What you can do is register with a second number instead of your personal one, as long as it’s a real mobile number you keep.
Can I use WhatsApp on a computer or tablet without a phone?
Not on its own. WhatsApp Web, the desktop apps and the iPad app are linked devices, and WhatsApp says they “can’t be used as the primary device on an account.” They also log out if your primary phone goes unused for over 14 days. An Android tablet can be the primary device, but you register it with a phone number.
Does a WhatsApp username replace my phone number?
No. A username hides your number from people who don’t already have it saved, but WhatsApp says “A phone number is still required for your WhatsApp account.” Usernames are also rolling out gradually, so you may only be able to reserve one for now.
Can I use WhatsApp without a SIM card?
WhatsApp says you need one: its help pages expect “an active SIM card in your phone for the phone number you want to register”, and an active SIM or eSIM with your number “is required to maintain access to your WhatsApp account.” The account follows the number, not the SIM, so removing or swapping the SIM “doesn’t automatically sign you out of WhatsApp.” You don’t hold a SIM for a PVADeals number, so it isn’t the setup WhatsApp describes. Its codes reach your dashboard only while you rent it, so keep renting for as long as you want the account.
Can I register WhatsApp with a rented number?
It can receive the registration code, but the account stays tied to that number. WhatsApp’s terms ask you to “provide your current mobile phone number”, and if someone else registers it later, you’re logged out. Use a long-term number on Auto Renew or an All services plan: see the prices on this page and our guide to a temporary number for WhatsApp.
What happens if I lose my WhatsApp number?
If someone else registers it, you’re logged out, because registering a number on a new phone logs out the old one. While WhatsApp is still active on your phone, move the account in Settings > Account > Change number (the code goes to the new number), which WhatsApp says you must use “in order to maintain access to your account.”
