Yahoo Verification Code Without Your Personal Number

Yahoo asks for a mobile number before it will create your account, and it keeps using that number afterwards. If you’d rather not give Yahoo your personal number, a temporary non-VoIP number can receive the verification code for you.
This guide explains what Yahoo uses your number for, which numbers work, how to get the code on a temporary US or UK number, and how to make sure you don’t lose the account when the number is gone.
Why does Yahoo ask for your phone number?
Yahoo’s help center lists what you need to create an account: “a password, date of birth, and a mobile number.” It explains why: “A valid mobile number is needed for the verification and account recovery process.”
That second part matters. Yahoo may ask you to verify again later, and its help center lists when, including when “You’re using an unfamiliar browser or device” or sign in through a VPN. It says: “We may send a verification code to your Yahoo app, recovery phone number, or recovery email address.”
Which numbers work for the Yahoo verification code?
Yahoo is clear about one thing: “SMS codes can only be sent to mobile numbers,” so a landline won’t work. It doesn’t publish a rule on VoIP numbers, but members often report a different error with shared numbers: “Your mobile number is listed on too many Yahoo accounts”.
| Number type | Works for Yahoo? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Landline | No | Yahoo sends SMS codes to mobile numbers only |
| Free public receive-SMS number | Rarely | Shared by everyone, so it’s usually already on too many Yahoo accounts |
| VoIP or app number | Unreliable | Sign-up checks commonly screen out internet-based numbers |
| Fresh non-VoIP (mobile) number | Usually | A real carrier line that hasn’t been used on Yahoo before |
A non-VoIP number is a real mobile number from a carrier, so it looks like an ordinary phone to Yahoo. If you’re not sure what kind of number you have, see how to check if a number is VoIP, or read our guide to VoIP vs non-VoIP numbers.
How to get the Yahoo verification code on a temporary number
- Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
- Choose Yahoo and the country you want: the United States or the United Kingdom.
- Pick a rental length. A short-term number lasts 20 minutes; a long-term number lasts 3, 7, 14 or 30 days.
- Fill in Yahoo’s sign-up form, enter the number with the right country code (+1 for the US, +44 for the UK) and click Continue.
- Choose to get the code by text message. Yahoo can also call you or, in some cases, use WhatsApp, but PVADeals numbers receive SMS only.
- Copy the code from your PVADeals dashboard, where it appears as soon as it arrives, and finish creating your account.
Short-term or long-term: which should you choose?
A short-term number (20 minutes) is enough to receive the sign-up code, and it costs the least. After that it’s gone, and reuse after the 20 minutes isn’t guaranteed.
On Yahoo, that can be risky. The number becomes your recovery phone, and Yahoo warns that if your recovery info is “wrong or inaccessible, you may not be able to regain access to your account again.” So, whichever rental you choose:
- Add a recovery email in your Account Security settings as soon as the account is set up.
- Consider two-step verification with an authenticator app. Yahoo shows this option once you have at least two recovery methods on your account.
- Rent long-term if you plan to keep the account. A long-term number (3 to 30 days, renewable for as long as you like) stays yours, so you can receive Yahoo’s codes whenever it asks.
US or UK number?
PVADeals offers both US and UK numbers for Yahoo. Either works from anywhere in the world: you don’t need a local SIM card, because the code appears on your dashboard. See our US phone numbers and UK phone numbers.
If the Yahoo code doesn’t arrive
- Click Resend within five minutes. That’s Yahoo’s own advice if a code doesn’t arrive.
- Make sure you chose a text message, not a call or WhatsApp.
- “Listed on too many Yahoo accounts”? Use a different, fresh number.
- Locked out after too many attempts? Yahoo says the account “will unlock automatically after 12 hours”.
- No SMS at all? If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost comes back to your balance automatically as store credit.
Keep your personal number private
A temporary non-VoIP number from PVADeals verifies your Yahoo account without your personal number.
