SoFi Phone Verification: Codes and Changing Your Number

SoFi phone verification code

SoFi phone verification is part of SoFi’s two-factor authentication (2FA). After your password, SoFi may text or call you a one-time passcode, ask for a code from an authenticator app, or ask you to verify with your ID. It also texts a six-digit code when you change your number, and its terms set rules for the numbers you give it.

When SoFi asks for a verification code

SoFi says: “You may be asked to complete 2FA when you sign in on an unrecognized device, sign in after 30 days of inactivity, reset your password, or update the email address on your account.” You choose how the code reaches you:

2FA method How it works
Text message A one-time passcode from SoFi’s short code 697634
Phone call The passcode by phone call
Authenticator app A code from an app such as Google Authenticator or Authy
Verify with ID A photo of your ID, front and back, and a selfie

To switch, open Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication in the app.

If SoFi’s code isn’t sending

If more than 5 minutes have passed, SoFi suggests:

  • Double-check that your correct mobile number is on your account.
  • Check your connection: stable WiFi or cell service.
  • Try a different 2FA method.
  • Call SoFi at (855) 456-7634 if you still can’t log in.

Got a code you didn’t request? Linked services such as Mint, Intuit or YNAB can trigger one when they sync. SoFi still suggests changing your password and reviewing your account.

How to change your phone number on SoFi

In the SoFi app:

  1. Tap the Profile icon at the top left and select My Information.
  2. Tap Edit next to Mobile Phone in the Contact Info section.
  3. Validate your current phone number.
  4. Enter your new number and tap Send Text.
  5. Enter the six-digit code from SoFi’s text and tap Verify code.

SoFi’s phone number guide also covers the website.

Lost your old phone? Log in with your email and password, then choose Verify with ID instead when SoFi asks for a 2FA method. After a photo of your ID and a selfie, you can pick a new 2FA method.

SoFi identity verification

To open an account, SoFi collects your legal name, date of birth, address and Social Security number (or TIN). “SoFi verifies identities through electronic means, also known as non-documentary”, and if that fails it may ask for copies of your ID or address documents.

Later, SoFi Shield can add a check before actions “such as signing in, making certain transfers, viewing sensitive account information, updating profile information, or applying for a SoFi product.” These checks confirm it’s you, and no phone number replaces them.

Which number to keep on SoFi

SoFi’s terms ask you to certify that the numbers you give “are your contact numbers and that you are permitted to receive calls at each of the telephone numbers you have provided to us.” You also agree “to promptly alert us whenever you stop using a particular telephone number.”

So keep a number you’ll have for as long as you use SoFi. A 20-minute number is the wrong tool. Your options:

  • An authenticator app for 2FA, which keeps sign-in codes off your phone number.
  • Your own mobile number.
  • A second number you keep: a long-term US number with auto-renew, or a US All services number.

PVADeals numbers are real mobile lines from carriers, not VoIP, so SoFi sees an ordinary mobile number, but we can’t promise it accepts every number. They receive SMS only, so choose text for 2FA, and note that SoFi’s calls won’t reach them. To use one:

  1. Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
  2. Choose SoFi from the list of websites, with the United States. If it isn’t listed, rent an All services number instead, which works on any website.
  3. Pick a long-term rental and turn on auto-renew.
  4. Change your number in SoFi as above, and copy the six-digit code from your PVADeals dashboard, where it appears as soon as it arrives.

If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost comes back to your balance automatically as store credit.

Keep your SoFi codes to yourself

SoFi texts from 95178 (fraud and account security), 697634 (passcodes) and 63617 (customer service), and says “we will never ask for sensitive information like passwords or account numbers via text.”
