Twilio Phone Number Verification: Which Number to Use

Twilio phone number verification

Twilio phone number verification happens twice. When you sign up, Twilio asks you to verify your personal phone number. Then, on a free trial, every other number you want to call or text has to be verified as well.

This guide explains each check, which number to use for it, and how to keep access to your Twilio account afterwards.

Why does Twilio ask for your phone number?

Twilio’s sign-up has three steps: “Verify your email address. Verify your personal phone number. Customize your account by providing information about your project.” The number keeps mattering after that:

  • It sets your trial country. “SMS messages and voice calls are restricted to your sign-up country, determined by the phone number you used during registration.”
  • It’s your first verified recipient. “The phone number you signed up with is automatically verified.”
  • It can only be on three accounts. “A single verified recipient number can be associated with a maximum of three accounts globally.”

How verified caller IDs work on a trial

On a trial account, “you can call or message only verified recipients from a trial account.” Twilio sends a one-time code to each number you add, and “free trial projects are only allowed to add verified caller IDs via SMS.” Each account can verify up to 5 recipients, and Twilio removes the restriction when you upgrade.

Twilio check When it happens How the code arrives
Sign-up verification Once, when you create the account A code sent to your number
Verified caller IDs For each extra number you test with on a trial SMS only, on trial projects
Two-factor authentication When you log in A call, an SMS or an authenticator app

Which number to use for Twilio phone verification

Twilio calls it your personal phone number, and its terms let it suspend an account if “information in your account is untrue, inaccurate, or incomplete.” So use a number you control and will keep. If you’d rather not put your main mobile on a developer account, a dedicated second number can do that job.

Two practical points:

  • Match the country you’ll test in. The sign-up number decides where your trial can send messages and calls.
  • Expect SMS, not calls. PVADeals numbers receive SMS only, so get the code by text, and don’t use one anywhere Twilio needs to call you.

A PVADeals number is a real mobile number from a carrier (non-VoIP), so Twilio sees an ordinary mobile line. Read more about VoIP vs non-VoIP numbers.

How to verify Twilio with a PVADeals number

  1. Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
  2. Choose Twilio from the list of websites, in the United States or the United Kingdom. If it isn’t listed for your country, rent an All services number instead, which works on any website.
  3. Pick a long-term rental (3, 7, 14 or 30 days) and turn on auto-renew, so the number stays yours. See the prices below.
  4. Sign up on Twilio, enter the number with its country code and get the code by SMS.
  5. Copy the code from your PVADeals dashboard, where it appears as soon as it arrives.
  6. Set up 2FA with an authenticator app straight away (next section).

Keep access to your Twilio login

Twilio’s help center is clear: “2FA is a required security feature on all Twilio accounts, and can’t be disabled.” Codes can come by call, SMS or an authentication app. Choose the app, so your login doesn’t depend on a phone number at all.

Twilio also shows you an emergency recovery code, only once. Store it somewhere safe: “In the case that you lose your phone, the recovery code will allow you to login to your account.”

That’s why a 20-minute number is the wrong tool for Twilio. The number stays on your account long after sign-up, so use a long-term number on auto-renew, an All services plan, or your own number.

Need an SMS verification API?

If you want to receive verification codes in your own code, for example to test a sign-up flow end to end, PVADeals has a REST API with webhooks and an MCP server. See our SMS verification API.

Keep your personal number off Twilio

A long-term non-VoIP number from PVADeals can receive Twilio’s sign-up code. If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost comes back to your balance automatically as store credit. Frequently asked questions

Why does Twilio ask me to verify my phone number?
It’s one of the sign-up steps, along with your email address. The number then sets your trial country and becomes your first verified recipient: “The phone number you signed up with is automatically verified.”
What are verified caller IDs on Twilio?
Non-Twilio phone numbers you’ve confirmed with a one-time code. On a trial you can only call or message verified numbers, up to 5 per account, and trial projects can only add them by SMS. Upgrading removes the restriction.
Can I use a temporary number for Twilio verification?
Twilio asks for your personal phone number and can suspend an account if the information in it is “not true, accurate, or complete.” If you don’t want your main mobile on it, use a second number you’ll keep, such as a long-term number on auto-renew, and set up 2FA with an authenticator app.
Can I buy a phone number from Twilio?
After you upgrade, yes. Trial numbers “are shared Twilio-owned numbers, not dedicated numbers assigned to your account,” so a paid account buys its own Twilio number to send messages and make calls.
