SMS-Activate Alternatives After the Shutdown (2026)

SMS-Activate alternatives

SMS-Activate, one of the biggest services for receiving verification codes, is gone. If you used it, or you just searched for it, here’s what happened and where to go instead.

We run PVADeals, one of the alternatives, so we’re not neutral. The facts below come from SMS-Activate’s own website and Telegram channel, and from each service’s own website, checked on 27 October 2026.

What happened to SMS-Activate?

SMS-Activate closed in December 2025. Its website, still up on sms-activate.org, now shows a farewell page: “SMS-Activate service is closed. We have completely ceased our operation since December 22.” It thanks “everyone who has been with us for these 10 years.”

The timeline, from its official Telegram channel:

  • August 2025: SMS-Activate announced it was leaving Russia, because a law in force from 1 September 2025 banned handing subscriber numbers to third parties.
  • 29 December 2025: it announced the closure and said the brand no longer existed. Support would only handle withdrawals.
  • 16 January 2026: balances under $30 could be moved to HeroSMS with a one-time promo code.
  • 29 January 2026: withdrawal requests closed. The website says withdrawals “were available until February 5”.

SMS-Activate gave no official reason for closing worldwide. Explanations you may read elsewhere are guesses.

Is HeroSMS the same as SMS-Activate?

Not exactly. SMS-Activate’s farewell page says: “We provided our technologies to the HeroSMS service team… We recommend trying it.” HeroSMS calls itself the successor to SMS-Activate, but also says it “acquired technology and infrastructure, not the company itself” and operates as an independent company. Your old SMS-Activate account and balance didn’t carry over automatically.

Watch out for fake SMS-Activate sites

SMS-Activate warned: “If you find a service called SMS-Activate, then be sure they are scammers.” On 27 October 2026:

  • sms-activate.io, the old main address, no longer loads.
  • sms-activate.org, .guru and .ru show the farewell page.
  • sms-activate.world redirects to HeroSMS.
  • sms-activate.page, once listed as an official address, now sells Telegram accounts.
  • Look-alike domains such as smsactivate.com aren’t the original service.

Don’t top up a site that uses the SMS-Activate name.

Two more things to know:

  • 5SIM isn’t for US residents. Its rules say the service is “not available for residents of the United States and Russia”.
  • DaisySMS has closed too. It announced its shutdown on 24 February 2026 and closed on 26 March 2026. See DaisySMS alternatives.

Which alternative fits you?

You need many countries and cheap one-off codes, as SMS-Activate offered: HeroSMS is the closest match, since it runs on SMS-Activate’s technology. 5SIM, Grizzly SMS, SMSPVA and PVAPins cover many countries too. Most of their numbers are virtual, so check the number type before you buy.

You need US or UK numbers that websites accept: a non-VoIP number is a real mobile line, so it passes the VoIP checks that turn virtual numbers away. TextVerified sells US numbers; PVADeals sells US and UK numbers per website, Australian 20-minute numbers, and All services plans in six countries.

You want to keep the number: many websites text the same number again when you log in or recover the account, so a 20-minute number isn’t enough for an account you plan to keep. TextVerified, PVAPins, SMSPVA and PVADeals all rent numbers for longer.

Moving from SMS-Activate to PVADeals

If US or UK numbers cover what you used SMS-Activate for:

  1. Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
  2. Choose the website and country. Rent a 20-minute number from $0.09, or 3 to 30 days from $0.70.
  3. Read the code on your dashboard as soon as it arrives. If an eligible number receives no SMS, its cost comes back as store credit automatically.

Moving from code? PVADeals has a REST API and an MCP server: see the developer docs.

Frequently asked questions

Is SMS-Activate still working?
No. Its website says “SMS-Activate service is closed. We have completely ceased our operation since December 22”, and its official Telegram channel announced the closure on 29 December 2025. Any site still selling numbers as SMS-Activate isn’t the original service.
Is HeroSMS the same as SMS-Activate?
Not exactly. SMS-Activate says it gave its technology to the HeroSMS team and recommends it. HeroSMS says it acquired the technology and infrastructure, not the company, and runs as an independent company.
Can I still get my SMS-Activate balance back?
Probably not. SMS-Activate’s Telegram channel stopped taking withdrawal requests on 29 January 2026, and its website says withdrawals were available until 5 February.
What is the best SMS-Activate alternative?
For many countries and cheap one-off codes: HeroSMS, 5SIM (not for US residents), Grizzly SMS, SMSPVA or PVAPins. For real non-VoIP US and UK numbers you can keep for weeks: PVADeals, or TextVerified for the US.
Why do some websites reject numbers from these services?
Many websites check whether a number is VoIP and refuse it, and many limit how often one number can verify. Virtual numbers used by many customers hit both problems. A fresh non-VoIP number, a real mobile line, gets through more often.
Did DaisySMS shut down too?
Yes. DaisySMS announced its shutdown on 24 February 2026, disabled sign-ups and top-ups, and closed on 26 March 2026. See DaisySMS alternatives.
