Virtual Phone Number for Telegram (2026 Guide)

Telegram won’t create an account without a phone number. If you don’t want to give it your personal number, or you need a second account, a virtual number can receive the login code instead.

This guide explains what kind of virtual number Telegram accepts, why some numbers get limited, and how to sign up with a real US or UK number without losing the account later.

Does Telegram need a phone number?

Yes. Telegram’s privacy policy says you provide your mobile number “to create a Telegram account”, and its FAQ adds: “Telegram accounts can only be connected to a mobile number. We currently don’t support landline numbers.”

The number is more than a sign-up step. It’s how Telegram identifies you: “whoever has the number, has the account”, as the FAQ puts it. Keep that in mind when you choose a number, because it decides how you protect the account later.

Which virtual numbers work for Telegram?

“Virtual number” can mean very different things, and Telegram treats them differently. Its spam FAQ warns that some numbers “may trigger an overly harsh response from our system, either due to their previous owners’ activities or due to them being certain virtual/VOIP numbers.”

Free numbers are a particular risk on Telegram. Because the number is the account, anyone who sees a login code on a public page can sign in as you. Even our own free non-VoIP number is the wrong choice for Telegram.

How to get a virtual number for Telegram

1. Create a free PVADeals account and add credits: crypto from $3, or a card through Stripe from $5.
2. Choose Telegram and the country: the United States or the United Kingdom.
3. Pick a rental. A short-term number lasts 20 minutes; a long-term number lasts 3, 7, 14 or 30 days, and is the better choice for Telegram (see below).
4. Open the official Telegram app, enter the number with its country code, and ask for the code by text message. PVADeals numbers receive SMS only.
5. Copy the code from your PVADeals dashboard, where it appears as soon as it arrives, and finish signing up.
6. Secure the account straight away, before the rental ends: turn on two-step verification and add a login email (next section).

Keep your Telegram account after the number expires

Telegram ties the account to the number, and its FAQ is blunt about losing it: “we can’t help you unless you have access either to the phone number or to Telegram itself on any of your devices.” So set up a second way in while you still have the number:

• Turn on two-step verification in Settings > Privacy and Security. Telegram explains that “you will need both an SMS code and a password to log in”, so “the phone number alone will not be enough to log in to your account”. You can add a recovery email for the password too.
• Add a login email. Telegram can send login codes to an email address instead of the number. It’s stored separately from the recovery email.
• Stay logged in on a second device. When you’ve recently used Telegram on another device, Telegram may send the login code there instead of by SMS. Telegram warns that this isn’t a replacement for an up-to-date number, though.

If you plan to keep the account for a long time, rent the number long-term and renew it, or move the account to a number you’ll keep: Settings, tap your number, then Change Number.

Short-term, long-term or All services?

• Short-term (20 minutes) is the cheapest way to receive the sign-up code, but the number is gone afterwards. Only use it if you set up two-step verification and a login email right away.
• Long-term (3 to 30 days, renewable) keeps the same number, so you can receive Telegram codes again. Turn on auto-renew to keep it for months.
• All services gives you one number for any website. It’s worth it if you’ll verify Telegram and other apps on the same number.

Do you need your own number for Telegram?

Not entirely, but you don’t have to use your own. There are two ways:

• A virtual number from a service like PVADeals, as above. It’s the cheapest option.
• An anonymous +888 number. Telegram says “you can have a Telegram account without a SIM card and log in using blockchain-powered anonymous numbers available on the Fragment platform.” These numbers “work only on Telegram, they cannot receive regular SMS or phone calls”. All of them sold out in December 2022, so today you buy one from an existing owner, paid in crypto. On 27 October 2026 even the lowest auction bid on Fragment was worth about $1,900.

Hide your phone number on Telegram

By default, only people in your contacts can see your number. To go further, open Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number:

• Set Who can see my phone number to Nobody.
• Set Who can find me by my number to My Contacts, so strangers who save your number can’t match it to your profile.

Telegram notes that people who already know your number and saved it will still see it. Set a username too, so people can find you without a number at all.

If Telegram limits or rejects your number

• Use the official Telegram app. Telegram says that “in some conditions, only the official applications can receive a login/signup code via SMS/call”.
• Choose SMS and wait a minute before requesting the code again.
• If your new account is limited, it can still message people who have your number saved, and reply to anyone who writes first. Telegram says a first limit usually lasts “a few days or so”.
• Try a different number. If an eligible number receives no SMS during the rental, its cost comes back to your balance automatically as store credit.
